I'm speachless after reading this book, simply beautiful...”
“This is my favorite Janette Oke book. I'd love to see it made into a movie. It would almost be like one of those classic westerns, but with a Christian emphasis. There's a little twist at the end, but like all of Janette Oke's books, you know it will turn out alright in the end.”

Yes | No“Though A Gown of Spanish Lace wears all the trimmings of a western novel, it is at heart a love story. And a very charming love story at that. Ariana Benson, orphaned as a baby when her parents were killed in an Indian raid, was raised by a loving, Christian couple who made certain that she was provided not only with every practical physical need, but also a strong spiritual upbringing and a deep love of God. Ariana will need both of the latter when she is kidnapped by an outlaw band and imprisoned in a filthy shack high in the mountains. She is desperate to discover their reasons for the kidnapping, but no answers seem to come her way, not from the outlaws and certainly not from God.
But then everything changes the day the boss’s son shows up at her cabin door as her prison guard.
Laramie Russell knew no other way than the life of an outlaw, but when he discovered Ariana cowering in the lonely cabin in back of camp, he knew that something had to be done to reconcile his father’s crime. In a daring rescue, he frees her from her prison and sees her safely across the long trail to the home of her kin. But during those long days on the trail, with the ever-present possibility of the outlaw band and even the law trailing them, he realizes that his feelings for her are deeper than those of a liberator toward a captive.
By this point in the book, most readers will have the ending decided and the credits already rolling. But be forewarned: as far as this book is concerned, “it ain’t over, ‘til it’s over.” The secrets of both Laramie’s and Ariana’s pasts are suddenly unearthed in a mind-boggling discovery that could forever destroy their budding relationship. And yet, at the same time, a connection deeper than any of which they could have dreamt is discovered in the Spanish lace of an heirloom wedding dress.
A Gown of Spanish Lace certainly has its faults—namely, the nonexistent flaws of the heroine and a rather unbelievable motivation for the kidnapping—but as a whole it is an excellent book. The characters, especially Laramie, are engaging and realistic, the plot is wonderfully paced, and the romance is so natural it just seems to flow. The surprise ending is led into well enough that it doesn’t seem to be a direct turnabout by the author, but neither are so many hints dropped that the average reader (or the above-average reader, for that matter) should be able to pick up on what is happening.

“I've read this book over and over again. A great book that girls do not want to miss!”
