I come back to Laurie Colwin again and again, especially her two collections of essays on food and cooking. Like most of her novels, this one explores domestic life, love, work, and friendship among smart and interesting people. It contains one of my favorite lines in a novel: "Friendship is not possible between two women one of whom is very well dressed."
