"Raising the Roof" looks at congregations whose worship attendance has reached a plateau between 150 and 250 and who have difficulty moving beyond that level. It is the result of research done in congregations by author Alice Mann, and offers a detailed plan for these congregations who wish to look at themselves more deeply and develop their calling. The book offers an analysis of congregational size (family, pastoral, program, and corporate sizes), describes barriers to growth, and offers strategies for growth.

Our congregation is about one-third through the process described here. We have found the analysis very realistic and helpful, and the detailed description of the learning process has led already to much fruitful discussion. This book really works where "the rubber hits the road," in actual congregations.

Even for congregations which may not actually grow in numbers, "Raising the Roof" will be a guide to providing personal and effective ministry with current members. But I suspect any church using this book conscientiously will find themselves growing as well.
