McCullough has been one of my favourite authors of historical fiction since I started on her excellent Masters of Rome-series way back in 1991. After reading the entire Masters of Rome series, which McCullough said was going to end with the October Horse, I wish she would have kept her word. Weakest book in the series, although perhaps because the stosry is so well known, her version simply seemed illtempered and shrill, especially Cleopatra, last of the Ptolemy pharaohs. But I want it to have the complete set, as some of the volumes were equisite.
