    This whole novel felt distant to me. It felt like it was happening in a far distant world (although it takes place in Europe and America between world wars) and the characters felt so distant. There didn't seem to be much of a story arc--just Katherine floating through her world. And while I am assured she IS feeling things deeply, I don't feel along with her.

    The bits that I never like when I re-read this book always fall to the background when I read her descriptions of music and art and faith.
