A Wind in the Door (Time Quartet)

by Madeleine L'Engle

A Wind In The Door is a  fantastic adventure story involving Meg Murry, her small  brother Charles Wallace, and Calvin O'Keefe, the  chief characters of A Wrinkle In  Time. The seed from which the story grows is the  rather ordinary situation of Charles Wallace's  having difficulty in adapting to school. He is  extremely bright, so much so that he gets punched around  a lot for being... (read more)

This book focuses on the boy Charles Wallace, his sister Meg, and Calvin O’Keefe, and their battle against creatures of nothingness called Ecothroi. The Ecothroi are trying to kill Charles Wallace by stopping the farandole inside the mitochondria of his cells from being able to produce energy and Meg must find a way to save him. A cherubim comes to their aid and helps Meg discover a way to battle the nothingness with life and light. This book is a great and thrilling read, a little on the scientific side; it delves into a story about creatures that live inside the microscopic energy producing organ inside a cell. This would be a good book to read at the same time as a cell unit to tie the ideas together. I would recommend this book as a read aloud, individual read, or even a class read depending on the reading strengths of my students.

We are reading this as a family, (me, hubby and 7 year old daughter) and are all digging it. Its a little harder to grasp for the kiddo than Wrinkle was, but she is still enjoying it.

Interesting imagery, a bit too abstract, I think for the young children it was written to. I think it also leans to far toward pantheism or monism, couldn't exactly tell. But the conflict about the danger of doing one's own thing makes for useful discussion. I found the ending pretty confusing, barely able to make sense of it. Maybe because I'm an adult now?

Meg remains the same lovable character as do the others. The new additions are wonderful, and the blend of science and magic continues to work wonderfully. The ending brought tears to my eyes.

Do not read this wonderful YA book without reading the entire, fantastic, 5-book trilogy (all great sci-fi trilogies end up being either 5 or 6 books long, right?)
terrificly written, YA, christain sci-fi. If you missed them as a kid, read them now!

    A wrinkle in Time
    A Wind in the Door
    A Swiftly Tilting Planet
    Many Waters
    An Acceptable Time
