I would highly recommend this book for every older teen and young adult female of color. It helped me express feelings I had yet to understand. It is beautiful, powerful, moving and real.

tho shange says that the work should not be reviewed as a play, but as a poem, it's still a bad poem. i think that the sexist society of inner city black communities in the late 60's can be expressed more artistically by having real characters, and a script instead of a jumble of average (at-best) monologues that don't collaborate to make a solid story at all.

I've had the pleasure of performing as the Lady in Purple in this melodic and lyrical play. It sends a powerful message on love, heartbreak, abuse and survival that all women of color experience. Our cast cried, laughed, smiled and frowned during the production. What is truly amazing is that all were seasoned women and the response we received from men and women audiences were such a blessing. I love my director to this day for including me in such a remarkable production.
