This is the grim looking book selection for Feb book club.... Why do I keep letting these people tell me what to read? ”
“Disturbing and riveting”

I felt like it left lots of questions unanswered and was not as edgy/dark as film...which is quite unusual as I almost always prefer book to film.
The story is one of obsession, sex, impending doom.

“Excellent book if you like dark and edgy. You know from the outset that it's a train wreck waiting to happen but you just can't tear yourself away. One unforgettable, shocking scene. Passion run amok. Would be great for a Book Club discussion if everyone in your Book Club is interested in such a dark book - definitely "R" rated. Well done film with Jeremy Irons and Juliette Binoche also.”

It begins by exploring in very philosophical terms what it means to fully live one's life and how you mark happiness. At the start, the main character is a man of hard work and morals, but as the novel progresses, you see a darker side of his personality. The book is all about his slow descent into a hell of his own making, and all the while he marches further into the blackness because he wants to 'live'. For him, the only way experience life is to surrender to the worst parts of human desire. By the end, you've seen his entire life tore apart, and for what? A few moments having lived in the arms of another damaged soul? I liked this book. I liked the raw brutality of the writing and the characters, but i would be very hesitant to recommend it. This book is not light reading.”
