“In which our plucky heroine, Helene Hanff, finally gets her coveted, dreamed-about trip to Jolly Old England, and in which she is feted and treated like royalty by all the fans of her first book (the justifiably praised "84 Charing Cross Road"). No, this book isn't as charming as that one was, BUT it's not bad in its own right. I loved the tone of the back-and-forth letters in the first book, but her use of diary entries as the basis for this, the sequel, was also very enjoyable. She's still got the quick-barbed wit so prevalent in "84 Charing," but it's just a different style, and with many, many more people/characters showing her across the countryside, a little less illustrative of the relationships in the first. Still, really wonderful! I'd own both.”

Now, in Duchess of Bloomsbury Street when Helene first sees Charing Cross Rd. with her own eyes - I cried again. Helene Hanff is simple, witty, clever, and utterly enjoyable every time she takes pen to paper. I enjoy romping through London with her and cannot wait to read what she has to say about life in America when I finally find myself a copy of Apple of My Eye. And, if I ever visit London, I hope I have even half as many wonderful people available like The Colonel and PB to escort me to all the best sites, and then maybe my trip could be almost as perfect.”

It is the journal of her 1971 dream trip to London, where she finally meets her friend Frank Doel's family (after his death) as well as many new people, fans, and some old acquaintances as well. They show her around the city and the sites, constantly invite her out, and shower her with kindnesses. The reader joins her on her ramblings across London and parts of England. The book is charming and I really liked it, but nothing can compare to '84, Charing Cross Road' I think. ”

Can't remember all I know is I read 84 Charing Cross Road without any knowledge of any other books by Helene Hanff. I walked into a used bookstore that I have been frequenting for years and saw this book sitting there. For all the world to see. And I thought to myself OMG I have GOT TO GET THIS BOOK before anyone else sees it! And I was not disappointed. It was just as lurvely as 84 Charing Cross Road. And just as sad I might add. Although I have to say the book/story itself (in both cases) were not entirely sad. Actually there were only bits of sadness but mostly they were very chipper little stories. MUST READ I say.”
