A very enlightening story and a great example as to how student- teacher relationship could be...

There is not one dull moment to be found in the book , whether its about a bus ride or a student crush!

this book is very interesting because it is about a student teacher relationship in the ghetto of london. Its a little hard to picture that because London is known for its fancy buildings and rich people but apparantly the ghetto is just as bad as it is here in NYC. i thought that the book was inspiring because the teacher was black and it was a very tough time for blacks, especially in London. The main character had to show courage when he became the new teacher at the school. He went into a classroom full kids that would not pay attention to any adult.

Over the years what with reading so many of other stories about teachers in a tough school turning around the class they taught I had not quite remembered if I read this one, although most of those I do remember - whether from books or from news or otherwise, true stories or others based on true stories - are mostly about inner city schools, more about Manhattan or similar regions, perhaps predominantly about New York City. Then again living in a region does familiarise one with happenings there, and too the circumstances there are fertile for much of similar stories.

Then again if the review sounds unfamiliar it might be that I read it before the differences of the stories sunk in - it takes a certain blasé adult to notice the racial lines first or foremost, before the rest of the story and its theme. Or an upbringing where those things matter more. If I read the book again, I might notice if this factor had escaped me - or I might remember other details that are not similar to the New York stories along similar lines.
