Jennifer, Hecate, MacBeth, William McKinley and Me, Elizabeth

by E.L. Konigsberg

Elizabeth is an only child, new in town, and the shortest kid in her class. She's also pretty lonely, until she meets Jennifer. Jennifer is...well, different. She's read Macbeth. She never wears jeans or shorts. She never says "Please" or "thank you." And she says she is a witch.
It's not always easy being friends with a witch, but it's never boring. As first an apprentice and then... (read more)

The novel's protaganist, Elizabeth, is such a charming and funny character that the other elements of the book pale in comparison to her. The other main character, Jennifer, is creepy and rude and completely unbelievable. Why would Elizabeth even want to be friends with her? We're never given an explanation, or really, even a hint. Konigsburg is usually so clever and imaginative, but this story falls flat. And I'm still confused about the ending: Is there a riddle, or isn't there? I've reread the ending and I'm still scratching my head.

I recall I was in 5th grade when I read this book and I sure had a nice time reading another of Konigsburg's witty and adorable imaginations..

    An adorable young adult book.

Elizabeth is such a likable character, a little gullible, but still likable. She is the typical 5th grader just trying to make it through.

I felt nostalgic reading parts of this, especially the Christmas PTA night.

perfect kids' book. happy-happy ending thingy, but great characters and very simple kind of narration that makes it seem so real.
