Though background info takes awhile before the action really starts, this novel takes the reader from Bavaria in the 1800s to the Canadian wilderness and a town's development, then to France as a memorial is built to commemorate the Canadians lost in WW1. Two threads intertwine, and at the same time, a brother and sister grow up far from one another. The wood- and stone-carving continue throughout. Historical fiction well done.
