Gribbon's book, like othes he has written on the history of science, reveals the real life personalities of legendary scientists like Isaac Newton. Although some know about Newton's feud with Robert Hook (of Hook's law), few know that Newton got much from Hook to support his theory of the colour spectrum. He was so jealous of Hook that he was very likely the person who threw away Hook's portrait, making him the only member of the Royal Society who does not have his portrait hanging on the walls of the Society.
