I first saw a Reading Rainbow episode based on this book when my children were in preschool and I was moved. It's a touching story about an old badger who dies and how his friends cope with their grief. The first winter they're so sad that they can't talk about Badger. But then, when spring comes, they start remembering him and then sharing those memories. Through sharing these memories, they're able to celebrate Badger's life and friendship - in a way, he's still with them.
