This might not be his best book but without it you are missing a big chunk of back story for many of his books that follow. It was intense, intriguing and surprising. I truly enjoyed it and felt a lot for the engaging characters.

Woods makes no apology for not trying to top his first...and best novel. This compelling drama of crime and racial tension was also made into a TV mini-series which is also worth the trouble of ordering through interlibrary loan. I saw bits of the serial, read the book, then watched the whole thing. This is probably the only time you'll read this from me: I don't think it matters which you do first. Very high quality writing and acting.

Story about the Chief of Police in a county over many generations. Not my usual fair but it is my favorite. Prejudice ands deceit of the people in the era when it was allowed. It shows that over time people truly don't change for we have the same bizarre behaviors as the past

Woods' masterpiece about crime and corruption in a small Georgia town that spans five decades. Ingenious.
