Not Without My Daughter

by Betty Mahmoody

In August 1984, Michigan housewife Betty Mahmoody accompanied her husband to his native Iran for a two-week vacation. To her horror, she found herself and her four-year-old daughter, Mahtob, virtual prisoners of a man rededicated to his Shiite Moslem faith, in a land where women are near-slaves and Americans are despised. Their only hope for escape lay in a dangerous underground that would... (read more)

what the writer didn't know was that she had NOT married one of the ellite of the society. every country has dishonest, cruel, strange, abusive... people in them, and she was one of the unlucky ones to have become a member of one of these families!!! she had no right to make it seem like all iranians are like that!!!

Kind of exaggerating... don't know what poor Betty has been through but I really can't imagine that at that time cockroaches just walked around on dinner table with noone minding at all !!!This is so revolting...Sometimes I couldn't stop laughing or believe what I was reading. We are by no means Barbarians and it is hardly imaginable that the sort of husband Betty describes in her book is anything near intellectual or learned let alone a doctor!!! I'm sorry she had to put up with a psychopath like that and go through a living hell , but all I want to say is that there are maniacs like this all around the globe and it can't be pinpointed to a specific country or used as a propaganda against a nation with such great and ancient history. The book is not recent anymore but it still hurts to think there is still such literature available at bookstores. The only thing which is soothing is that people are more aware of their surroundings than before and don't accept every crap and are not easily brainwashed before they really get to know the facts :) Anyways I hope she finds peace of mind wherever she is right now...

I really loved this book. The determination of a woman and the hardships she faced has been portrayed well. The feelings of a mother is also very touching

An incredulous journey of a womans will to survive against all odds...its a true story and a horrific tear-jerker. Its also been made into a movie, but we all know the book is always better. Either way, a must-read and must-see!
