  • Prince Prospero: From:The Masque of the Red Death. The main (and only named) character. A wealthy prince who seeks to escape a pestilence plaguing his country by secluding himself and his close subjects in an Abby.
  • The Red Death: The Masque of the Red Death. A plague that sweeps the country. Signs of it are bleeding from the pores. It can kill within a half-hour.
  • Pluto: The Black Cat. Feline. The antagonist of the story.
  • Wife of Narrator: Black Cat.
  • Narrator for Black Cat: Black Cat. Self-proclaimed animal lover.
  • Fortunato: Cast of Amontillado. The unfortunate victim of Montressor's revenge during Carnival.
  • Montressor: Caste of Amontillado. Main character and narrator. Feels personally wronged by his friend, Fortunato. For that he seeks revenge during Carnival.
  • Ulalume: Name derived from the words "sorrow" and "light."
  • Psyche: Ulalume. Perhaps an allegory for the narrator's soul or sorrow. Is very melancholy.
  • Narrator for Ulalume: Ulalume. A man(?-never specified) who walks one night with Psyche. In contrast to her melancholy, he seems very happy.

First Sentence

Believing only a portion of my former volume to be worthy a second edition-that small portion I thought it as well to include in the present book as to republish by itself.
