“Good beginning to this series. It's a little confusing at first, but it truly makes you think! You can't help but be attracted to the mystery of Roland and The Man In Black. The curiosity of Mid-World is something that drags you into it, making you want to understand its strange mysteries.”

Consequently, if you like(d) this book you may or may not like the rest of the series.”
“I ended up liking this enough to continue reading the series; but it took me forever to get started.”

It was only after reading the entire novel did I find out that all the stories were written at different times and that there is a bigger master plan for all of the characters involved.
At moments it was difficult to follow what was happening, but I enjoyed the meat of the story and some of the dialogue is a rip.
I would be amazed if Mr. King is able to finish the bold endeavor.”
“King at his best. John Wayne meets Lord of the Rings.”

I've reread the entire series twice except the last book, which for one reason or another I can't bring myself to read. I like having the story incomplete. ”

Yes | No“Stephen King's masterful epic begins with Roland, the last gunslinger, traipsing through the desert, following his nemesis, the man in black. Along the way he enters the doomed village of Tull, and later leaves after the village is destroyed. He develops a strange friendship with a mysterious boy named Jake, and listens to his mysterious tale of his death and reappearance in the lonely Way Station. Together they traverse the caverns under the mountain range, battling and escaping a colony of Slow Mutants, and finally reach a decaying steel trellis, where Jake falls to his death, and where Roland finally finds the man in black, and listens to his riveting tail of the mysteries of the universe. Throughout the entire tale, the colossal shadow of the Dark Tower hangs over the last gunslinger, the center of the universe, the mystery from where all the mysteries of life are held. Stephen King has created a masterpiece, part of the epic that would be hailed as his greatest work. Entering a macabre version of our own world, you will be riveting by this amazing tale of the last gunslinger, and the shadows he creates.”

First of all, the narrator for the audio book does a fantastic job and he was fun to listen too, but as for the story I'm a bit torn. King is a great story teller and he creates some really great imagery, but I wasn't too impressed with the story as a whole, particularly toward the end. The whole journey, searching for something is a common theme, but then he starts getting philosophical/allegorical/I-don't-know-what toward the end. I understand this is a series and I'm sure there is some grand plan to all that was started in this book, but as a stand alone book, it felt like King was just writing whatever came to his mind for the fun of writing with no clear plan for resolving everything. I'm going to have to read some reviews before I decide to tackle the next book.”
