The Gunslinger is one of King's finest pieces of writing, a style he rarely repeated elsewhere in his canon. The overall series is a solid showcase of the author's strengths, and also his weaknesses. One of his great strengths is the ability to create compelling fusions of fantasy, wild west, and future fiction. While the Dark Tower series is derivative of the pop culture that King ingested, begining with the very character of Roland, the writer does it well in the first three books. One of the greatest weaknesses is that King didn't settle on the direction or the continuity until he was four books into the series. Not until the seperate book *Insomnia*, well into the 1990's, did King establish the idea of his novels being connected to the Dark Tower, and of the central antagonist the Crimson King.

Great by itself as a read but in all honesty you have to continue the series. The dark tower reaches into so many of his other books and novels its amazing. A must read

I really enjoyed the whole series, I also love many of Stephen King's other books, but safe to say these are not in he usual style of writing.

These were my first Steven King books that I'd read. He does a good job of portraying a scene, but seems to have trouble linking them together. I wasn't happy with the ending. It left me thinking "Why did I bother reading all this?"

I think The Dark Tower books are not indicative of Kings style. These are not horror novels, they're more fantasy/sci fi type novels.
If you've never read King I would actually start the same way he did. Read them in the order he wrote them. It's interesting to see his styles and imagination change.

I'd like to get into some of King's novels, but I'm not sure which one to start with. What do you guys think of the Gunslinger? Can someone give me a brief summary?
