I read the original version, then the revised. The changes weren't so dramatic that they would change the review.

*The Gunslinger* is the first book in the Dark Tower series, and actually stands alone more easily than the subsequent six books. The story comes to an (uneasy) break at its close. Also, the style is very different from the other books, and liking *The Gunslinger* is no guarantee that you will like the other books, and vice versa. ^_^

Of the two styles, I actually preferred *The Gunslinger* (although I understand that most people actually start to enjoy the series starting with *The Drawing of the Three*) because to me it seemed the most true to the epic style. It follows epic conventions a lot more closely than the other books, throwing the reader down in the middle of the action, and starting with the unforgettable line that will guide the rest of the series. ^_^

Not my favorite King by a long shot, but a great way to get me into a series which I hear is amazing. I'm excited to et into it!

I read this entire series because it came highly recommended (thanks, Synda) but I was very disappointed with the ending.

A bit slow paced to begin with I thought, but when it started to get going I was hooked. Really enjoyed.

This series was awesome. The first book was good, though it dragged a bit. The rest of them are terrific and you won't want to put them down.

I just bought Dumas Key, am looking forward to digging into that. Right now I have two books going to finish up first, three if you count the one I have left in my daughter's room that I'm sharing with one of her nurses. I am missing one book out of the Dark Tower set. I'm going to buy it later on after I have everything cateloged on my real shelf...something I've been remiss in getting done for the past two years. It's going to take me a while...but, oh well. I'll find another "old friend" along the way to dust off again....

The Gunslinger was an incredibly difficult book to get into, and has a completely different feel from any of King's other works. Much of the book is dry, and although it's one of his shorter novels, it drags on and on and on. However, if you can make it through this book, the rest of the series is truly amazing. As a whole, I think the Dark Tower series is his finest work. It is the common thread that runs throughout most of his other novels.
