Every chararcter's personality was so well defined - all different, very real, just like one's own group of friends with their own idiosyncrasies. Loved the portrait of the time period. A great read.

Intersting satire of the time between the 2 World Wars. The story follows 8 Vassar "girls". Worth reading for a mocking look at the time period and the changing views about women, mental illness, child rearing, Communism, etc.

Delightful: the lives of 8 high-middle class girls graduated from Vassar University. Their relations with men, and how they see marriage, sex and career in the post-1929 Crash years.

Interesting read about college friends and their lives after graduation from Vassar College. It flowed very nicely. I loved the author's attention to detail. My favorite character was Dottie Renfrew

Don't know how to rate it. In retrospect, it's trash. When we were young, it was daring and exciting

This was interesting in that I believe it was contemporary fiction in its time, late '40s/early 50's. I enjoyed many of the characters and found others tedious...but I think that may have been the author's point. I can only hope with the passing of time "Vasser girls" have grown past the self absorbed world conveyed in this novel.

I REALLY hated this book at first. If it hadn't been my book club's selection, I would've never persevered to the end. At some point, perhaps almost half way through, though, my feelings softened. A friend sent me a photo from 1933 of eight of the Miss America finalists from that year, and having visual images of eight young women of the same period seemed to help me care about the characters somewhat. Now that I've finished the book, I can honestly say I'm glad that I read it if only because the vocabulary really stretched me as a reader. It was quite an education for me of 1930's American women who hailed from a social class I will never attain. The characters were so far removed from anyone I've ever known or would care to know that it really minimized my enjoyment of the novel. I will say that there are aspects of life for women of that era that were fascinating, especially the role of birth control (or lack thereof).

Perhaps a bit outdated now, this book nevertheless succeeds in capturing the feeling for a certain time in our history by exploring the lives of some young women entering the real world after attending to their ivory tower education (at Vassar). It also succeeds in capturing some of the angst and self-consciousness of growing up in an absurd world - one which is just as absurd now.

Lives of a group of Vassar graduates during the 1930s depression. I didn't expect these personal issues being so frankly discussed even though it was written in the 1950s. Interesting slice of life. Was this a movie?
