In 1978, science fiction writer Spider Robinson wrote a scathing review of The Stand in which he exhorted his readers to grab strangers in bookstores and beg them not to buy it.
The Stand is like that. You either love it or hate it, but you can't ignore it. Stephen King's most popular book, according to polls of his fans, is an end-of-the-world scenario: a rapidly mutating flu virus is accidentally released from a U.S. military facility and wipes out 99 and 44/100 percent of the world's population, thus setting the stage for an apocalyptic confrontation between Good and Evil.
"I love to burn things up," King says. "It's the werewolf in me, I guess.... The Stand was particularly fulfilling, because there I got a chance to scrub the whole human race, and man, it was fun! ... Much of the compulsive, driven feeling I had while I worked on The Stand came from the vicarious thrill of imagining an entire entrenched social order destroyed in one stroke."

Hi Nancy! This is one of my favorite, if not THE favorite Stephen King book I have read. It is definately worth the time to read and absorb.

I read it in the summer of 93.

Hi! Yes, The Stand is definitely worthwhile. It was the very first Stephen King novel I'd read, and it got me hooked on his writing. It is a long book, but King is masterful at keeping your attention through the lulls in the action. Happy reading!

Oh, I do remember seeing the Children of the Corn on TV as a mini-series and was scared outta my mind. I remember the first segment was on when I was baby-sitting and thinking that it wasn't a good choice to be watching as I walked home in the dark. I never did read the book. Is it worth while?

I did too (read The Stand long before King was known as a Horror writer). I can't drive past a corn field without thinking of "Children of the Corn."

I read this long before King was known as a Horror writer...or before he became so "hollywood", so I had no preconceived notions. I just loved this book and after reading some of these comment think I have to dust it off and read it again. My other two favorites by him are The Talisman and Tommyknockers.
I never did see the movie of this, but it sounds like I wasn't missing anything! : )

When I saw the movie I thought "thats nothing like I thought they would look like!" It's too bad they cut the part out when the boy almost kills Larry.

They did make a mini-series during the late 90's. It was horrible. All i remeber is that it was bad and that Molly Ringwald and Dahmer(from Coach) were in it.

Storm of the Century, and IT were very good as well. I wish they would make a movie or mini series of his book Insomnia. I love that book as well.

This one's my favorite, too, and I think the best movie presentation of a SK book ever. It's just so epic, I love it. Altho I read Desperation recently and found that to be a close second.
