Dolores Claiborne works as a maid for a wealthy woman in remote Maine. When she is indicted for the elderly woman's murder, Dolores' daughter Selena returns from New York, where she has become a big-shot reporter. In the course of working out the details of what has happened, as well as some shady questions from the past and Selina's troubled childhood, many difficult truths are revealed about their family's domestic strife. This is cleverly portrayed with present reality shot in cool blue tones blending seamlessly into flashbacks shot in vivid color.

Dolores Claiborne is being questioned for two deaths, the death of her husband Joe, and the death of an elderly woman named Vera. She states right off the bat at the beginning of the book that she killed her husband, but that the other death was an accident and wasn't her fault. The novel is Dolores' account of her part in the two deaths. This book was excellent; it is one of Stephen King's best thrillers. Dolores is a fun character-she is determined to keep her children safe even if it means killing her husband in order to do so. The reader easily finds that she is an admirable and quirky character.
Furthermore, Dolores tells the story in the present and it sounds like you're there with her as she describes what drove her to murder her husband and why she is innocent of killing Vera. She tells everything through first person point of view, with a fun-to-read Yankee accent. It is a thriller in the sense that there are two deaths in the novel, one of them being a murder. But it is also a comedy. There are many hilarious scenes with Dolores and the old woman, Vera, which add to the exciting experience of reading this book. For example, early in the book Dolores describes how degrading she found her live-in-nurse job taking care of Vera, because Vera wears diapers and goes potty all over herself many, many times. Vera also has insane hallucinations from time to time that dust bunnies are trying to kill her.
Continuing on, if you look more in depth at the book, there are a few things that were sub-par; the death of Vera for instance does not seem like it fits in. After Dolores builds up the suspense to a climax when she describes killing her husband, the novel still has a good hundred pages left that seem like it could have fit in better elsewhere. If King had placed the events with Vera previous to the climactic events with her husband Joe, it would have made a lot more sense, and the climax would fit better closer to the end. But overall, it was an excellent read. Fans of Stephen King's other books would definitely enjoy this one.

This is one of my very favorite books of Kings..mainly because of the writing..the characters in this book are so well written and Delores especially has such realistic dialog..

One of King's most overlooked and underappreciated books. One of my favorites King books and female protagonists of all times.
