In Stephen King's "Christine", why does Artie start to become more juvenile when he owns the car. Is it a spirit or just his general attitude?

My grandparents had an old 57 Chevy up on blocks in a barn at their house, and my cousins and I, after reading Christine, were mortally afraid of it. I agree that the movie was a pale imitation of this story.
