Not your typical Stephen King, but then again this was originally published under a pseudonym. In this story there's a competition to see who can outlast the others in a long walk that ends when there's only one walker left. The twist is that as soon as you quit walking the guards kill you. This was a gripping read that's also an interesting psychological study of competition with some likeable -- and not so likeable -- characters.

the book the long walk is about a young boy named ray garraty. he signed up for the long walk and didnt expect to make it in. the long walk is a walk that is about 200 miles with only water and a few snacks. it is an only boys thing though. they walk and walk, but if they slow down below 4 miles per hour they get a warning. if they get more than three warning then the guards will shoot them. they called everybody by their last names in this book.

An incredibly haunting tale whose imagery never really leaves you.

Do you like books that give you nightmares? Well if so, this book is the right for you, The Long Walk by Stephen King; this book also won the Barnes & Noble award. The long walk was one the novel that Stephen King wrote before he was published in his own name, and that were only published (under the pseudonym Richard Bachman). 100 teenage boys are picked from a televised draft lottery and told to walk until they stop. Of the 100 who start the walk, only one survives, and he is granted the ultimate prize: anything he wants for the rest of his life. Find out who wins the atrocious walk. Some people say it's the old version of Hunger Games, I agree, however i think it is even more scary than Hunger Games! I think this book is for kids older than 10 years old because it is very very very scary!

Like pretty much all King's novels, it was an easy and engaging read that kept me interested the whole way through. And like most King novels, the ending was not as good as I hoped it would be but was not (by any means) bad at all. I guess that it left a lot to the reader and sort of left it open to their interpretation to fill in the blanks. I was just hoping for more of an explanation or something.

    Maybe that is my issue...

I love how King delves into the mindset of each character in this book. There's a lot of tension among the competitors and it feels like you're a part of their struggle.

Interesting novel by the master, apparently penned very early in his career. Although a short novel I felt it would have worked better in an even more abbreviated form and faster pacing. Character backgrounds and relationships are central to this book and King draws some fine examples. Unfortunately I feel he failed to produce enough arcs within this group to really carry you through, some being merely shadows and others somewhat repetitive. These small grievances aside an excellent story that will satisfy.
