A broad scope story of the 1918 influenza pandemic, primarily from an American perspective, embedded in a richly drawn scientific, medical and political context. Wonderfully detailed.

Excellent overview of the flu pandemic of 1918. I was a little frustrated that it stayed too much on the overview level and didn't get down to what it was like for the everyday person living through it -- or maybe not living through it.

Kind of repetitive, but great information.

I started this for my non-fiction book club but book club has come and gone and I'm returning the book to my will read someday category but I just can't read it right now. It's long, repetitive and like reading a textbook but I'll go back to it when I'm in the right frame of mind.

Excellent. Fascinating book detailing the outbreak and fight to cure the 1918-1919 Influenza Pandemic. A great narrative history.

Wonderful narration (as always) by Scott Brick.

This book was absolutely fascinating and more then a little terrifying. The author details the history of the medical profession in the U.S. which is quite eye-opening and explains in understandable terms why the flu virus was so deadly. It completely convinced me to get a flu shot because the H1N1 virus is the same one responsible for all those deaths in the 1918 pandemic.

When I decided to read this book, it was in the interest of learning about the current H1N1 pandemic. I live in Southeast Asia and the problems is very real, partly because information is difficult to get. Reading about the virus from the WHO and the CDC is helpful, but I wanted a more in depth explanation. So, I tracked down this book to seek information.

What I found in this book was all the information and more regarding the 1918 pandemic, which was another strain of H1N1. The book is gripping, from the foundation of modern medicine, the change in US society, World War I and the virus itself. I found the book very difficult to put down. It is frightening to read about the death, but also how the pandemic was covered up. Not that up to 100 million deaths worldwide can be covered up, but the role in which government attempted to paint a pretty picture was difficult to believe.

I highly recommend this book. Given the worldwide situation and the fact that I live in an area where H1N1 and H5N1 are considered very serious problems, this book is a must read.

repetitive and disorganized, difficult to get through although there were bits and pieces that were interesting especially now with the H1N1 pandemic.

True history that reads like a novel. Why hasn't the movie version been made? If you think the swine flu is bad, read this and get an idea what a worst case scenario really looks like.

Very timely and important in understanding the potential for tragedy in today's threat of Swine Flu.
