“Synopsis: The book follows a man named marlow who becomes friends with a sailor named Jim. Jim dreams of being a hero at sea, however, when he finally gets his chance he chokes and is stripped of his officer ranking. Marlow attempts to get Jim a job, but Jim's memories of his failures haunt him, amking marlows task very difficult. Eventually a job is secured, and jim becomes the hero by defeating an outlaw. He The falls in love with his employers daughter. Her father, jealous of Jims success, hires a pirate to kill jim. However, Jim escapes, but only to be shot by the father later.
stylistic devices: The sentence structure is long. Except in dialogue. The diction is very sophisticated. Marlow is also the name used for the main character in HEART OF DARKNESS. I found out that Conrad uses marlow as a character name in many of his books.
Theme: It always gets worse before it gets better. Jim is at a low point in his life. he cant keep a job and he keeps having painful memories of his failures at sea. however, eventually he overcomes all of this, and emerges as a hero and someone people look up to.
I would recomend this book to people who enjoy to read. personally, i think it was lengthy and that it drug out for too long at certain points. ”
