This is a case where the film is much better than the (audio)book. The reader is great, but the story is mostly a character study of Chief Brody--which is fine, but then everything just stops when the shark is killed and all the threads are left loose. Plus the character of the shark is pure...

As a marine biologist, I am ashamed it has taken me so long to read this book! Adding insult to injury, my parents went to see Jaws on one of their first dates. I was destined to eventually read - and LOVE - this book!

This the ultimate suspense novel. A huge shark is stalking the shores of a small New York summer town. He strikes without warning. And before you know it, the body count is escalating and Chief Brody must find a way to stop it before more deaths weigh on his conscience.

Most of us are probably familiar with the iconic trio of Brody, Hooper, and Quint. However, the book has a much different focus than the movie. Yes, the shark is still the focal point, but the book has so much more backstory about the residents of Amity that enhances the reading.

You can definitely tell the book was written in the 70's. Smoking is prevalent, there are some racist comments, and the environmental/conservation tone of many books of today is lacking. I particularly think that Quint as a representation of the legendary Frank Mundus is interesting. I find Mundus's story interesting and particularly like that he transformed from a shark hunter to a shark conservationist before his death in 2008.

The story is engaging, it is a quick read, and Benchley quite possibly created one of the scariest characters in all of the suspense genre.

I really enjoyed the shark parts in this book. They were just as scary as the movie. Don't expect the book to be the same as the movie, though. The character's have different personalities and there is a romantic section in the book that isn't included in the movie. I can see why it was left out. I could tell certain bits were written by a male. All in all, I enjoyed Jaws, especially the first and third sections. I would have liked to have read more shark action, but on the whole, it was an enjoyable and thrilling read. I won't be getting in the water any time soon. :)

I read this years ago. It was good, but this novel is one of those rare instances in which the movie is better than the book.

Just about the perfect book in my opinion. Great read for the beach or anytime.

This is a case where the film is much better than the (audio)book. The reader is great, but the story is mostly a character study of Chief Brody--which is fine, but then everything just stops when the shark is killed and all the threads are left loose. Plus the character of the shark is pure instinct at the beginning and when you see it back at the end it has grown the brain of a Einstein.

This book was a load of crap. One of the extremely few circumstances where the movie is not only better than the book, but much better.

An easy-to-read, pleasant "popcorn" book, though certain random loose ends that seem to go nowhere made for some serious eyebrow raising.
