Should we be free of a moral compass if there is no divine judgment? Meursault's bleak, nihilistic, motiveless murder appears at first to be the result of a lack of companionship with Maman, but eventually turns into an existential atheist crisis. Enjoyed the symbolism of the neighbor and his dog, the worthless relationship with Marie. [Wanted to read this to talk to my students about it, since they all read it in their senior English classes, as well as to see why the press secretary would say that Bush was reading this in his off-time. Seems appropriate, as Bush could = Meursault in that he kills Arabs without provocation and feels he is without error.]

This is (IMNSHO) Camus' best work. It's a simple story told in simple language and the way it's put together is pure art. English translations don't do it justice. As the old french saying goes, "Translations are like women - if they are beautiful, they are not faithful; if they are faithful, they are not beautiful."
