This is a continuation of the story begun in The Snow Queen, and to tell you the truth it was so complex that I don't remember much of what happened in it. I remember enjoying reading it but feeling lost while doing so. Perhaps that's because I was really young when I read it. In any case I do remember one thing about the ending and all I can say is that Ms. Vinge has this almost pathological determination to take things away from her characters whenever they find something that means something to them.

This is the third part of the Snow Queen story. The first book follows the adventures of Moon Dawntreader and her love Sparks moving from the quiet non-tech world of their people into the world of the Snow Queen. There is a second book, World’s End, which follows the adventures of BZ Gundhalinu, considered dishonoured by his people for his aid to and love for Moon. In the third book the scattered characters meet again as the story comes to its climax.

My last reading of The Snow Queen was a long time ago, so I reread it before moving on to this novel. Sometimes when you reread an old favourite it’s disappointing because your perspective on things has changed. The Snow Queen was as exciting a book this time as I remembered it and the Summer Queen was a smoothly flowing continuation.

The story is completely compelling and vivid and swept me away. There are quite a few characters that you get to know well, but it’s still very clear who the central characters are and they are all human enough and heroic enough. Not only the planet, but also the entire political and social background of the Hegemony and the Empire that existed before are sketched out so well before you that you believe in them. The technology is interesting - the right mix of a potentially possible future and mystery.

I was disappointed in this sequel to the Snow Queen. It does tie up the loose ends of the previous story, but the genuine characters lose their spark and the plot is bogged down by tedious day to day happenings.

A companion book to The Snow Queen- this book is a wonderful wrap up to the first story, with dazzling technology and government secrets blending with old fashioned well written characters. Vinge never loses the human element, even surrounded by her cannily crafted worlds.
