Satire of the future and the genre itself, it's a desolate look at the future, a grim laugh at what our current technological progress is hurtling itself into; a laugh at capitalism, America, and life--the best kind of laugh there is.

When I first picked this up I thought it was going to be unreadable. I love a good cyberpunk novel with all the futurisms and weird cultural norms, but this was off the hook even for me. I came back to it later though and once I started to get into the groove things made more sense. Jeter is...

The writing style threw me a little with Noir. It went into such detail that I frequently lost the flow of the story. Pacing problems aside, this is a wonderfully imagined, dark future ruled by corporations. McNihil (great name, eh?) is an ex-information cop who smells a trap but has no choice but to dig deeper into the rabbit-hole.

Androids, eye implants and email notifications buzzing around people's heads all feature in this dystopia. If you liked Blade Runner, you'll probably like this. I remember it well and will read it again—as soon as I find my copy…

When I first picked this up I thought it was going to be unreadable. I love a good cyberpunk novel with all the futurisms and weird cultural norms, but this was off the hook even for me. I came back to it later though and once I started to get into the groove things made more sense. Jeter is obviously very comfortable writing in the future depicted by Philip K. Dick's Do Android's Dream of Electric Sheep (Blade Runner) although here the main character is a bit schizchophrenic in that he chooses to separate the 1920s part of that world from the futuristic or real world around him by means of some type of eye implant.
The thing I found troubling about the book was that it seemed to have no point. It was all atmosphere and no purpose. I finished it and felt that I knew the characters well and just wished they had done something useful.

Masterful, poetic-- dark and funny. This is one of my favourite cyberpunk titles-- certainly a defining title in the genre.
