“It was very interesting to read how a teenager handles going back to live in their ancestor's land.”

However, you didn't really need a lot of background knowledge, which is critical since I am pretty confident most of my students would not have any ideas about relationships between Arabs and Jews. I loved the writing (I am a huge Nye fan) and the people were very believable and I cared about them. I don't know if a boy would stick with it even with the brother playing a decent role. Recommended.”

It honestly discusses her inner turmoil in understanding and accepting both her American and Arab heritage. Liyana must also confront the ongoing tensions between the Jewish and Palestinian cultures when she befriends a Jewish boy. This book is beautifully written and paints a moving and vivid portrait of life in and around Jerusalem today.

“Nye's writing is thoughtful, poetic. She allows the reader to peer into the life of Arabs in the Middle East without the blinders of religious belief. The main character's wisdom provides a model for the kind of thinking and change that needs to happen in order to ever achieve peace. Her love of words dances with the mind of the reader.”

Despite the unrest, continual threat of war and the cultural differences between the Arabs, Armenians, Jews and Palestinians, Liyana gradually finds new friends and acceptance in her father's country. At times the plot is a little slow and Liyana is not always believable. However, the book does provide a interesting portrayal of the Arab-Israeli conflict that is occurring in the Middle East.”
