Candyfreak: A Journey Through the Chocolate Underbelly of America (Unabridged)

by Steve Almond

A self-professed candyfreak, Steve Almond set out in search of a much-loved candy from his childhood and found himself on a tour of the small candy companies that are persevering in a marketplace where big corporations dominate.

From the Twin Bing to the Idaho Spud, the Valomilk to the Abba-Zaba, and discontinued bars such as the Caravelle, Marathon, and Choco-Lite, Almond... (read more)

While at times the author could be a little whiny and repetitive (we get it, you used candy as a replacement for the affection you believe you were denied as a child), it was still an enjoyable read, filled with fun facts, funny moments and a great turn of phrase. I think his description of the marshmallow bunnies going through the chocolate enrober is to die for. A great profile of an obsession. Oh the author is also a liberal, so those readers who would find fault with him based on that should know that his political ideology bleeds through from time to time.

What other book can make you laugh out loud and casually slip in the word crepuscular on the same page? Irreverent, some history, nostalgic (esp. for those who grew up in the 60s/70s)and many mouthwatering descriptions of sweets past and present.

Great gift for anyone who's literate and not a total stiff. My 11 year old loves it too.

If you get the chance to hear Steve read/speak, be sure to go! Don't forget to take your favorite sweet for his opinion.

The one flavor he neglects is dulce de leche.

Candy, humor, the underdog small business owner, and travel -- what's not to love? Almond, almost on a whim, undertook a cross country exploration of small, owner run candy companies who make 'regional" candies, such as the Idaho Spud, the Twin Bing, and my new favorite, the Five Star Bars. Almond does a great job describing the candy (fair warning if you're on a diet -- you WILL want to run out and try some of these bars), and the ways in which Hershey's and M&M Mars have come to dominate the market and squeeze out the little guy. There's a FEE for having candy bars racked next to cash registers in Wal Mart and other stores? Who knew?

This book started out well, and had me laughing quite a lot. But after he starts touring the regional candy factories it got a bit morose. When he's talking about his love for candy, he's at his best. You will want to have a candy bar on hand while you read it! It's his attempt to draw parallels between the candy industry & his personal life or politics that brings the book down. Overall a quick read, mostly fun, makes me want to tour a candy factory.

Travel and candy. What better combination is there! I'm delighted to know there's other regional candy bar nuts out there! Hurray for the Five-Star Bar!!

A delicious read that I finished on a x-c flight from Boston to San Francisco, where I dutifully scouted out all "odd" candies I could find!
