Perfect Strangers Every day, she sits at the top of the stairs leading to the beach. Always writing in her little notebook. Always watching. Watching the loving big brother, so caring and attentive to his little sister. Watching the handsome lifeguard with his golden tan. But no matter how closely she watches, she can't begin to know the secrets behind the perfect facades of their lives. And they can't begin to know the truth about the strange, sad girl who each day sits alone -- and watches.

Completely awesome. The girl is still mysterious, but yet, at the end, it reveals who she is. A great ending. I really like how it's told from different people's points of view. Sometimes this ruins a book, but it just made this one even better.

I liked this one well enough. Evan was a really sweet character. I liked Chris, too. The watcher was kind of weird, bu then you understand in the last ten pages why she's like that. Really good. Easy, though. I was done in about an hour.

Found it in the library one day and read it right there it was so short. I liked the style of writing, very pomeish, and gives a feel of fairytaledom.

Wierd. The main character only speaks approximately ten words throughout the whole book, and all of these words are in the last chapter. Not at all how I thought this book would be.

Summary: This book is about a family’s summer vacation on Fire Island. The children, Evan and his younger sister Callie worry about their parents’ marital troubles. At the same time Chris, a lifeguard that Evan idolizes, wonders how he will ever be good in his father’s eyes. Evan and Chris start to worry about the girl who has been watching them on the beach; everyday she sits on the stairs and watches people and writes in her journal – hence the name ‘The Watcher’. Towards the middle of the story you find out that the girl is named Margaret and she has been physically abused by her father. Evan and Chris help her call the police on her father and her mother decides to protect her and turns her husband – Margaret’s father – in.

Reason I choose this Book: Someone actually recommend this book to me and I really liked it because it focuses on family relationships, decision-making/survival. I also feel like it would be a good book to use for discussions on topical issues, such as; parental responsibilities, leadership, trust and caring for others.

Use in the Classroom: This book could be used for individual, small group or whole group reading. I thought that if it was whole group, I could possibly do something with the title of the book by pointing out how the name ‘The Watcher’ draws the reader’s attention to the book and we could discuss why they were interested or disinterested in the book due to the title. Afterwards, they could create a ‘Title Master’ – which is sort of like a book cover only a bit different – and create a new name for the book and draw a cover for the book that goes along with the title as well.
