The Land of Mango Sunsets: A Novel

by Dorothea Benton Frank

Her sleazy husband left her for a lingerie model who's barely more than a teenager, and her kids are busy with their own lives. But before Miriam Elizabeth Swanson can work herself up into a true snit about it all, her newest tenant, Liz, arrives from Birmingham with plenty of troubles of her own. And then Miriam meets a man named Harrison, who makes her laugh, makes her cry, and makes... (read more)

A nice story about a middle age woman that is stuck in a rut. Various situations make her think what is important and she finally truly becomes a woman who is caught up in real life and family.

    A good book.

A sweet and charming book that has restored my hopes in DBF's writing style. Perfect summer lounging around book ...

I have mixed feelings about this book. First, the cover art doesn't suit the book AT ALL, so it took me awhile to actually pick it up and read it. Second, I feel like the first half of the book is believable, but then after that, things just get really weird. For example, if you have two daugters-in-law, what are the chances that they both become your best friends enough to where they call you "Mom?" Like I said, just a bit hard to believe, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Miriam Elizabeth Swanson, divorced, see her organized life as a quasi-socialite spiral downward. With the help of new friends and her parrot, Harry, her life turns in an unexpected, and joyful direction. And as with many of Frank's books, that direction leads to Sullivan's Island, South Carolina. Maybe I should go there and see if it would work its magic on me. ;-)

I enjoyed this quick read -- it was funny and moving. The only thing I didn't like was the cover art. It makes it look like a really trashy beach read, which it isn't.

Dorothea Frank's newest book, I just finished it and loved, loved it. She wrote with her usual sense of humor that I get a kick out of, but this one had a tear-jerker moment and her life lessons moments in this one were pretty meaningful.
