This book is getting dated, having been written in 1989, but many of the authors’ insights into class and psychology are still relevant.

In Fear of Falling, Ehrenreich argues that the middle class suffers from an insecurity born of the knowledge that their social position is far from assured, and that insecurity filters into all aspects of their lives. And, while the picture she paints is relatively one-sided, her thoughts are interesting reflections on what it means to be “middle class” in America.

Although it is quite dated now, it is interesting to reflect on whether the trends identified in her book have waxed or waned in the years since its publication.
