This book is about a child living in a town where the town likes to shoot pigeons and if the pigeon didn't die on impact the boys would run out and wring its neck. Palmer hates watching the wringing so he tries to avoid the pigeon shoot but once he turns ten he will have to become a wringer but his tenth birthday approaches a bit to quickly.....

  • Palmer Larue: Palmer Larue,Has a nickname Snots for his gang, is the main character of the story. Palmer finds a friend in Dorothy Gruzik, who lives across the street, but by the time Palmer is 9 he grows apart from Dorothy and becomes friends with Beans, Mutto, and Henry. Palmer is constantly preoccupied with the horror of the Pigeon Shoot because he cannot stand the cruelty. Then he becomes 10
  • Palmer's Mom: A little overprotective and not happy at Palmer's new "friends."
  • Beans: His real name is Arthur Dodds and is so happy to be a wringer. The leader of the Palmer' gang
  • Mutto: Beans' right-hand man
  • Henry: Also in Beans' group. Only known as Henry
  • Dorothy Gruzik: One of Palmers old friends. Now he doesn't speak to her or play with her much.
  • Farquar: Farquar is a legendary wringer, he is the coolest and most feared kid in town, and is best at performing The Treatment
  • Nipper: Palmer's new friend.
  • Palmers dad: He got gold trophies for killing pigeon when he was young.
