Angel Clare, her beloved, is possibly the most wicked villain in all of literature. Thomas Hardy's beautiful descriptive prose illustrates the absurdity of proprietary ideas of what is "moral"...” see full review » see other reviews » |

The double standard placed on women is almost questioned but not quite. In the end it is supposed to be a tragedy, but Tess still seems to be blamed for her "bad decisions". I am a fast reader but it took me 6 weeks to get through this. After the first chapter I predicted how the story would end and I was right.
