This book breaks my heart. Tess is of that "delicate feminine tissue," and life tramples over her. Angel Clare, her beloved, is possibly the most wicked villain in all of literature. Thomas Hardy's beautiful descriptive prose illustrates the absurdity of proprietary ideas of what is "moral"...

Tess is relentlessly persecuted by others AND herself to the point where reading this is unbearable. The double standard placed on women is almost questioned but not quite. In the end it is supposed to be a tragedy, but Tess still seems to be blamed for her "bad decisions". Hardy is given too...

Lots of detail, I found myself skipping paragraphs at the end.

A good but heart wrenching book that leaves you with an ending that really isn't satisfying and yet that somehow fits the book.

I guess this was one of the first "real" books I'd read in a long time after degrading my mind with the Twilight series, so I was in love with it just based on its intelligence. There are real words in this book! Subtlety! Subtext! Social commentary! Oh, it's so good. I was depressed and angry as I read, but I was so glad to have a feeling other than "15-year-old."

Tess was difficult to get through. Although the plot did have some interesting twists, I found it combersome and dated. My high school senior read this for school. Although I am interested in history, I found myself wondering if there aren't more high quality books out there for high school literature.

Another required reading when I was in high school. I am a fast reader but it took me 6 weeks to get through this. After the first chapter I predicted how the story would end and I was right. I did not find the characters to be interesting at all and the story just dragged. It was like most other Victorian era stories I had to read in which the main character was a woman.

A beautiful novel, yet at times I found myself wishing the heroine would just get on with it. Yes, yes...you want to die, life is a torment, we GET it. Tess's passivity is understandable given the times and her circumstances, but still irksome.

It made me miss the last train out of Spain and I hated the ending. Obviously fairly absorbing, however.
