Back in college I wrote a paper about the use of music in Hardy's novels, and this little book was filled with English folk music references. In fact there is a wealth of description of English country life, a way of life Hardy saw was passing away. This little romance is much lighter than say, Far From the Madding Crowd, or Tess, or Jude the Obscure. If you like your English romances a little less dark, try this one. Very simplistic plot. Some nice descriptive prose, but missing the underlying social commentary and complex storylines of some of his latter novels. The history gives you a background as to why this is though.
