I am very pleased with this book! At first it was pretty weird, and I felt it was slow, and the author spent a lot of time on long descriptions. And I remembered the movie with Johnny Depp, so I was a bit skeptical. But the book turned out not so weird, very intriguing and interesting. I always wanted to read more, to find out the details of the mystery. And the ending, I thought was a lot more satisfactory than the one in the movie.

In a few words: Great literary mystery, I...

I'm a AP English Teacher and consider myself an intelligent reader, but this book never engaged me from the outset, but I stuck with it anyway. It is nowhere as exciting as Dan Brown's works, even though there are a few spots that raise the level of a rather ho-hum experience. Unfortunately, we never really care about the characters, although the concept is engaging when it isn't bogged down in narration.

This is a great "fantastical-mystery" type read. The attempt at an adaptation with Depp was HORIFIC. I think of all Perez-Reverte's historical mysteries, this is the most gripping. I think the characters are the deepest of all his books, and having also read it in Spanish, this is probably the best translated of his books. In all its a great summer time read for those that like a little more intelligent of a mystery.

This is my favorite P-R book. WAY better than the sad movie that used only one string of the plot. Great for people who love books and authors, including Dumas and Agatha Christie.
