There are a number of religious curses here (taking the Lord's name in vain), always identified as such. The themes are mature, but extremely well-managed by the author. The self-doubt that the cult lifestyle evokes is clearly identifiable in the narrator's voice, making the book a good one to discuss with young adults the idea of the powers of (any kind of) indoctrination. Mature 6th grades on up should be able to handle the themes of the book.
