Others might say it's a boring novel but what we must always remember about "Hard Times" is that it's an industrial novel that does not aim to appeal to the romantic side of things. It aims to represent truth and values and the harshness that comes with learning them in the society. With its...

Not as grim as I'd feared. Well worth reading, but not wonderful the way much of his earlier work is.

An excellent read to understand Victorian England's industry and utilitarianism, from a satirical Dickens angle. Also worthy of reading as a parent to understand one's overpowering influence on the mindset and outlook of your children.

My first Dickens, read for school, no less, but Charles Dickens being Charles Dickens, I assume this is pretty all right. At least it has a relatively happy ending, you know. And perhaps being fresh to the unabridged Dickens, the didactic prose wasn't as unpalatable as it could have been.

How depressing! Of course, I expected that going into it... it is Charles Dickens, after all. Still a worthwhile read. It's interesting to contemplate what desperate people will do in "hard times." Sissy and Rachael seemed to offer the only glimmers of light in an overall constricted circle of acquaintences, family, and near-strangers. How is it that the better off live a more miserable existance than the impoverished?

An appropriately named book. A sad story about hard times in industrial England. But like all Dickens books, there are so many interesting and colorful characters who elicit a grin even amidst the dreariness of the story, the book is still a good read. Dickens tackles some sad social issues, apparently willing to sacrifice some entertainment value to teach a moral point. Not a classic that you're likely to read to your kids, but it's worthy of your own time and reflection.

I'm trying to work my way through the less famous novels of Dickens. It takes great concentration to follow his prose, but it is usually worth the effort. His characters are always memorable. I wouldn't rate this one of his best efforts, however.

I liked this a great deal. Pits a sweet, innocent, caring girl against crusty schoolmaster Thomas Gradgrind.
