the stephen r. lawhead cycle. fun, fast paced, real characters. basically follows the traditional stories and character relationships, but a lot of liberties too. i don't know if the liberties are all that necessary, but they were fun and drove the story well. i would recommend it as good recreational reading, but if you want to get a good handle on the legends themselves, don't start here. try marion zimmer bradley's 'mists of avalon' or mary stewart's ' the crystal cave' series.

I love the Arthurian legend and imo this writer is one of the best tellers of the tale - this, the first book is quite slow to get going ( very slow ) but I never give up on a book and am glad I didnt as it lays the foundations for the rest of the series beautifully - I love Taliesin and Merlin I feel that this adds another dimension to the saga

Lawhead always seems to start his series slowly and this one is no different. While it does give a great account of Merlin's parents it's hard to get going and doesn't pick up until the end. Still a good read though.
