It seems that Elmore Leonard books run hot and cold. Some of his books can be so much fun, while others just don't do anything for me. Bandits would be one of the latter. It started off promising: an ex-con working in a funeral parlor goes to pick up a body from a leper clinic, befriended a hot nun, finds that the body he's picking up isn't dead but needs protection. Very promising start, then it kind of falls flat. Leonard tries to throw in people from Northern Ireland, the IRA, he throws in Nicarauguans and Sandanistas, throws in some political commentary about Reagan (the book was published in 1987) The book may have packed more of a punch when it was published because the topics were more relevant at the time, but I really don't think it aged well. It is signature Leonard and there were parts that I did enjoy, but as a whole, I wasn't very impressed - instead read Tishomingo Blues or The Moonshine War. 3 stars

Bandits - Great read . Contra military colonel comes to New Orleans to raise funds (and keep them for himself). Narrator works for his bro-in-law in funeral home, picks up a body that tursn out to be a ex-nun, alive, hiding from the contras. One the best Leonards in memory. Read May06. 370pp. co1987. Forward to Ned for Rangeley West bookshelf.

Another entertaining, short, well paced Elmore Leonard novel.

Leonard has a gift for interesting storylines, but his actual writing (the words, the sentences) is somewhat bland; there's no colour to it. It's almost as though he writes his books expressly to be adapted into screenplays.

Solid, prime-of-career Leonard. Good New Orleans setting. "Do you want to ask me at age 68 what I give a shit about and what I don't give a shit about?"

This is one of my favorite Leonard books. Lots of his signature humor and his usual tight plot.
