Surprised by Oxford begins with Carolyn Weber's arrival at Oxford University's Oriel College. Having recently completed a degree in Ontario, Canada, she is there on scholarship to pursue graduate studies in literature.

Back home, she leaves behind a loving but broken family and a fiance-to-be. During her first term Carolyn befriends a diverse group of people: beautiful, free-spirited Linnea; kind, pragmatic Hannah; intellectual, worldly Christians Mark, Michael, Rachel, and Dorian; typically British Edward; and preacher's son TDH--Tall, Dark, and Handsome. It is these characters who walk with Caro as she begins to explore the things of faith and spirituality.

After a particularly challenging and curiosity-inducing conversation at a holiday dinner party, she goes home for Christmas and cautiously shares her questions with her family. She's met with resistance and little understanding. This searching also means the end of her relationship with college boyfriend Ben.

When Caro returns to Oxford in January, she continues to seek answers. She is influenced by her friends, professors, mentors, and the very thing she knows so well--literature. The works of writers like C.S. Lewis have a profound effect on her understanding of God.

Surprised by Oxford is part coming-of-age story, part conversion story, and party love story. Told over the course of one academic year, it is the inspiring, beautifully written account of how one girl went looking for herself and found her Creator instead.
