Ooooh, scary....I actually put the book with its cover down on my bedstand. I'm not quite sure how the pieces wrap up in the final chapter - but Mr. Harwood creates such atmosphere (in the best Hictchcockian sense of the word), especially in his throwaway details (the main character's mother only reads mysteries written before WWII, like Rebecca, or naming the penpal after the nanny in Turn of the Screw) - that I didn't really care.
