In a time when villages are so small that everyone knows everyone else, one girl struggles to find her own way. After her sister’s violent death, Valerie’s world begins to spiral out of control; a marriage is being forced upon her, her father is the town drunk, her mother wants to control her and her true love wants to run away with her – but where can they run from this small village and it’s big secrets?

For generations, the Wolf has been kept at bay with a monthly sacrifice but now no one is safe. When an expert Wolf-hunter arrives, the villagers learn that the creature lives among them – it could be anyone in town. It soon becomes clear that Valerie is the only one who can hear the voice of the creature. The Wolf says she must surrender herself before the blood moon wanes, or everyone she loves will die.

  • Valerie: The main character. She was once Peter's childhood friend, and is to be married to Henry. When she was seven, she saw the Wolf. Father Soloman wants to kill her.
  • Peter: Valerie's childhood friend who has recently moved back to Daggerhorn, was banned/kicked out of the town. Is suspected of being the wolf.
  • Henry Lazar: The blacksmith's son, rich, loving and handsome. All of the girls love him but he only has eyes for Valerie.
  • Father Solomon: Werewolf hunter, priest, believes he is doing God's bidding but is actually horrible without reason. He is not afraid to kill innocent people.
  • Grandmother: Wisewoman who lives in a tree house outside the village compound. The woman who gave Valerie the red cloak. Valeries grandma.
  • Lucie: Valerie's adored sister. She is a good daughter and friend. Cruelly killed, was in love with Henry, son of the rich blacksmith
  • Roxanne: One of Valerie and Lucie's friends whos brother is Claude, has red hair. hides her breasts with care.
  • Claude: Roxanne's younger brother who is a coward but is a good listener. Likes tarrot cards, and is a bit strange. He is a dreamer.
  • Wolf: A werewolf that terrorizes and hunts the people of Daggerhorn.
  • Suzette: Valerie and Lucie's mother, and Casaries' wife.
  • Adrien: A rich blacksmith, Henry's dad, Handsome, brave
  • Madame Lazar: Henry's grandmother, is disapproving of a lot of things, including Valerie's family and actions.
  • Cesaire: The town drunk. The father of Valerie and Lucie, is married to Suzette
  • Rose: One of Valerie's good friends who enjoys flirting with boys.
  • Marguerite: Roxanne and Claude's mother and the the waitress of the local tavern.
  • Valerie: She is a strong women who doesn't just follow the crowd. She has to make tough decisions throughout all the book like who she will choose to love, and some decisions about the wolf.
  • Prudence: A friend of Valerie and Lucie. She can be arrogant and ill-tempered but always apologizes.
