This book is scary. It's dark. The whole narrative is structured around the mystery of why the beautiful, young daughter of a famous director committed suicide. The journey of discovery is a rollercoaster of darkness. Don't get me wrong -- if you have teenagers, they have surely read and/or seen a lot of similarly alarming material. And it's a wonderfully engaging and very well-written book. But it's highly unlikely that it would be appropriate for your 12-year-old. Some of the material involves foul language, sexual assualt, etc.
