• Charlotte (Charlie) Wallis: All Charlie Wallis wants is a career and a man. Not just any man, but a man to love and cherish her. Someone she can confide in, share jokes and toothbrushes. A life partner, not a husband – she’s modern – and a couple of babies like the other girls in her council block. And maybe a fast-paced career like those power-suited women racing around with spouted paper cups of latte in one hand and a briefcase in the other.It wasn’t much to ask. Was it?Apparently it is. London Core, a small local tabloid, employs Charlie. In her head she is a journalist, but her contract reads office clerk. But even that is called into question when the paper is taken over by the Middleton Group. Charlie hears that a serial killer is maybe targeting prostitutes and as no one is covering the story from the women’s point of view, Charlie dons her fishnets and practises her come-hither smile, together with recording equipment, and heads to Soho.
• Ben Middleton: Nobody understands Ben Middleton. He is deep and thoughtful; keeps his head down – preferably in a factual book on Astronomy – but basically down. But the book had to go when his mother died after announcing that his younger sister, Camilla, was the result of an illicit affair and not his father’s true daughter. Camilla, soon after, vanished in a puff of Gucci Rush. Ben has to oversee the takeover of a poxy tabloid daily, London Core, find his sister and heal the rift between her and his father
