  • Gaia Stone: A sixteen-year old midwife who runs away from her home town, Wharfton, and the harsh government, the Enclave, to survive
  • Maya: Gaia's infant sister.
  • Leon: An officer in the Enclave, and the son of the dictator. He is very close to Gaia, and a possible love interest
  • Matrarc Olivia: The leader of Sylum, who is fair but unmoving in her methods
  • Dominic: Matrarc Olivia's husband
  • Mx. Josephine: A seventeen-year old libby. A libby is a woman who chooses not to marry or has a child out of wedlock and is stripped of the right to ever marry or keep her children
  • Mx. Dinah: A self-proclaimed libby who rooms with Mx. Josephine
  • Walker Xave: One of the strongest, most handsome men of the pool. Also the most selfish and womanizing
  • Chardo Peter: One of the men of the pool vying for Gaia's affections. A brother to Chardo Will
  • Chardo Will: Chardo Peter's twenty-two year old brother. He is the town morteur or mortician
  • Mlady Maudie: Runs the lodge where Gaia is living. She is a member of the cuzines, women who have chosen to marry and bear children as a part of Sylum's rules. They have the right to vote and govern all the men who are considered second-class citizens
  • Mlass Peony: A young girl who spends a night with Xave, and comes to Gaia for help when all hope seems lost
  • Norris: The cook in the lodge. He is an expool, which means he cannot have children, nor get married
  • Mlady Adele: A cuzine who cares for Gaia's infant sister Maya
